What's actually on the shelf, and what gets ordered in
Walk the lighting aisle at any of the three counters and most of what a job needs is already racked: indoor fixtures, outdoor fixtures, security lighting, energy-saving lamps, and a wall of in-stock bulbs in more sizes and bases than a home center carries. Progress Lighting and Kichler make up a good share of what sits ready to go, because they move fast and Arrow keeps the common finishes and sizes stocked across Bel Air, Aberdeen and Elkton.
The line that does not sit waiting on a shelf is the harder one to plan around. A Framburg chandelier, a Dolan Designs sconce, an American Nail Plate fixture, or an Aladdin Light Lift for a fixture nobody wants to climb a ladder to change, those get special ordered against the specific piece you want. Knowing which side of that line a fixture falls on before the old one comes down means one trip to the counter instead of two.

Come to the counter with the old fixture, the part number, the room
The fastest way through the counter is to bring what you already have. The old fixture itself, or a clear photo of it, tells the counter more in ten seconds than a description does in five minutes, especially on anything with an unusual mounting plate or a canopy shape that has not been made in years. A part number off the base or the box does the same job even faster.
Room measurements matter more for lighting than most people expect. Ceiling height changes what a pendant should hang at, and a room's actual dimensions decide whether a fixture reads as generous or crowds the space. Bring the numbers, or a photo with something in frame for scale, and the counter can steer toward a size that will look right once it is hung, not just the one that looked good under showroom lights.

The wall in the showroom is not the room it's going into
A fixture lit under a showroom's even, bright lighting will not read the same over a kitchen island or a bathroom mirror at home. Light output and color both shift how a room looks once a fixture is actually in place. Warm light flatters a bath vanity in a way a showroom's cooler wash never shows, and a fixture that looked plenty bright on the display wall can read dim once it is the only source lit in a room after dark.
Outside runs by its own rules. A porch light or a landscape fixture needs a wet-location rating to hold up under actual weather, and a security light picked for a doorway does a different job than one picked to wash a driveway. None of that shows up standing in the showroom, which is exactly why it is worth asking the counter what a fixture is rated for before it leaves the store, not after it has been up through one winter.
Layout help, and the builder programs
Starting from a bare room or a full remodel is a different conversation than swapping one fixture, and Arrow offers layout and planning assistance for exactly that. Bringing in a floor plan, even a rough one, lets the counter talk through where fixtures actually need to land rather than guessing room by room.
Builder and model home programs run the same conversation at a larger scale, coordinating fixture packages across a whole home or a run of homes rather than one at a time. Both start the same way: come in with what you have, a sketch or a full set of plans, and talk it through at the counter.
The same counter for one lantern and for a job's worth
A homeowner replacing a single porch lantern gets the same counter, the same attention and the same straight answer as an electrician picking up a job's worth of fixtures for a new build. Neither one is treated as the smaller sale.
That matters most when the honest answer is not the one that sells something. If a fixture will not solve the problem described at the counter, the counter says so before it is bought, whether the job is a whole house or one light that never worked right.
